
Leadership Elk River
Leadership Elk River, sponsored by Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce, is a training program designed to develop community leaders by introducing them to key issues facing the community and equipping them with resources to lead both at work and in the community. Ten day-long sessions are conducted by leaders in their field who will cover a variety of compelling topics.
PURPOSE
·
Increase knowledge of the Elk River area.· Expand the leadership skills through increased understanding of organizational dynamics.
· To increase awareness and understanding of community needs and goals.
· To improve communications among area leaders.
· To prepare and challenge participants to increase their level of community involvement.

I. It’s All About You: What’s Your Style?

Participants will learn about their personality and leadership style using the DiSC Personal Profile. This session focuses on communication and professional working relationships.
II. History & Heritage

It’s been written, “a community that preserves the integrity of its heritage, that heritage will in turn preserve the integrity of the community.” Special attention will be given to historic sites and how they relate to community identity, as well as economic development.
III. Getting Down to Business

What is unique about business in Elk River? What sectors of business are here and which lie ahead? Learn why economic development matters to all businesses and how a community is formed around them.
IV. Local Government

The role of local government in the region will be featured. How do the demographics of our region dictate the services provided? How does a city balance a budget? Potential speakers will be elected officials and professional staff from surrounding cities and counties.

The goal of education is to develop a passion for lifelong learning in the student, regardless of their age or previous level of education. This month’ session will focus on our local learning institutions from birth to advanced degrees offering a fresh perspective on education at every level of learning.
VI. Media / Ethics

Understand the role of media in a community. How will technology and Generation Y change how media delivers their product? Learn about unique media related businesses. In the afternoon the class will examine the relationship of ethics in business decisions and leadership, with hands on exercises will help students apply the concepts.
VII. Business Day at the Capitol

This day brings together more than 1,000 business people to the State Capitol in St. Paul. See the legislature in action, attend a committee meeting, and find out the state of issues important to your community. Visits with local legislators are on the agenda. Dress appropriately and bring your camera.

Learn from an overview of the civil and criminal justice systems. The day includes tours of courtrooms and Sherburne County jail and you will hear from law enforcement and court officials.

X. Leadership in Action & Graduation

Spend the morning making plans for next year’s Leadership Elk River class. Celebrate your success with a luncheon program and graduation ceremony with your supervisor.
PARTICIPANTS
The class will be limited to 25 participants in order to increase the effectiveness of the program dialogue. Participants may miss no more than two of the training sessions if they wish to receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the series. Make-up sessions may be scheduled at courses during the next year to obtain a certificate of completion. A fee may apply.
SELECTION PROCESS
The Selection Committee strives to achieve a fair representation from all areas of the community.
The Selection Committee will notify applicants of their acceptance status in the program by August 14, 2009.

TUITION
$425 for the ten session program with a $75 discount for Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce members ($350) is paid either by the participant's sponsoring business or organization, by the participant, or jointly.
